Good to know
Do my students need to download anything? +
No. You send a link and they open it in any browser (Safari, Chrome, Edge) on an iPad, laptop or phone. Only you (the tutor) install the app.
What can students use to draw? +
An Apple Pencil on iPad (with pressure and palm rejection), a mouse or trackpad, or a finger. Students who never draw can still talk, watch, and use the calculator.
My student's school Wi-Fi blocks everything. Will it work? +
Usually, yes. School and office networks tend to allow ordinary web pages but block the always-open connection a shared whiteboard needs, which is why so many tools load fine and then sit there doing nothing. Tutorboard notices and switches to a connection those networks do permit, automatically, and remembers so the next lesson connects straight away. It's free on every plan, and you can turn it on for a student in advance from their lesson settings.
Can a student join without an account? +
Yes. They open your link, or go to tutorboard.tech/join and type the lesson code you gave them. An account is only for keeping their notes and files between lessons, and it's free.
Can students keep their notes, and can parents see them? +
Yes. Every student gets a private link to their own lesson notes and files, theirs to keep between lessons. If they sign in at their lessons page (free, no password, just an email link), every lesson you've shared with them appears in one place on any device. Parents get their own view, and can watch a lesson live when you allow it. Neither lets anyone into your board without you admitting them.
What about students in China, Russia or Iran? +
That's a different problem from school Wi-Fi: whole countries blocking the services most video tools are built on. One tick on that student routes them via an alternate server so the lesson connects at all. Included in Premium, or £2/month on Base.
Is it safe for tutoring children? +
Yes, that's the point. Video and audio are end-to-end encrypted and never recorded by us, each student has a private unguessable link, and no one joins your board until you admit them from the waiting room.
Where do recordings and boards go? +
Recordings and exported PDFs are written straight to a folder on your own Mac, organised per student. Whiteboards save there too, and on Premium they're also backed up to your own private account so they follow you to a new Mac or after a reinstall.
Do I need a Mac to teach? +
No. The Mac app is the fullest version, and it's on the Mac App Store, but you can also teach straight from a browser at app.tutorboard.tech on Windows, a Chromebook or a school laptop — same whiteboard, same call, same calculators, with your students and saved boards following you between them. An iPad tutor app is in testing and coming shortly, so you'll be able to teach with an Apple Pencil in hand, and a native Windows app is on the way after that. Students never install anything either way.
How do I subscribe or cancel? +
Whichever way you started. Subscribe in the app and billing is handled by the App Store, so you start, change or cancel from your Apple account. Subscribe in a browser and it's handled by us through Stripe, with a cancel-any-time link in your account and in every billing email. Either way it's a monthly subscription that renews until you cancel, the 14-day trial charges you nothing, and there's no lock-in.
